SUMMER TERM

Time Travel-Exploring and Celebrating Our Community Heritage

 

The theme of our Summer Term is the exploration and celebration of the history of Springfield and the surrounding communities in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Through presentations from living historians, activities and field trips, we will learn what life was like during this time period for both the settlers and the Native Americans, how and when the City of Springfield was established and how the natural landscape influenced the lives of the people who inhabited this area.

Summer Term classes will take place on Tuesdays. We will continue to have a morning and afternoon session except as otherwise noted*.  Morning session meets:  10:30-12:00; afternoon session meets 1:00-2:30.  The Summer Term begins on Tuesday, June 9th.  In case of inclement weather, we will meet at Lincoln Street for some educational rainy day activities (see below).

Tuesday June 9  Summer Kick Off, North Springfield Nature Area (aka Springweather Nature Area).  We begin our Quest with a Time Capsule and Quest/Treasure Hunt.  Bring a picnic lunch.

Tuesday  June 23  Visit Eureka Schoolhouse (the oldest schoolhouse in Vermont!) and Baltimore Covered Bridge. After visiting/learning about the Eureka Schoolhouse and Baltimore Covered Bridge, bring a picnic lunch to Patch Park, Charlestown, NH.

Tuesday     June 30  Colonial Games and Ice Cream Social/Stoughton Pond, Weathersfield. Try your hand at some old fashioned games and socialize with ice cream!

Tuesday     July 7  Billings Farm & Museum, Woodstock.

    Explore part of the area’s rural heritage and visit a working dairy farm.

Tuesday     July 14  Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, Cornish, NH.

 Learn about the history of the Connecticut River Valley through one of its most famous artist/sculptors. We will visit the Sculptor in Residence and go questing!

Tuesday     July 21  Quest, North Springfield Bog.  

Take a quest in this beautiful nature area which has the largest collection of pitcher plants in the State!

 
Tuesday     July 28  Campus Break

Tuesday     August 4  Berry Picking at Cherry Hill Farm, Springfield

Pick berries and then learn how they can be made into jams, jellies and preserves.

Tuesday     August 11  Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site/ End of Summer Term

*11:00-3:00  Celebration.  Explore the boyhood home of our 30th President, visit the old general store and learn how cheese is made! We will also be creating a time capsule to preserve some mementos about Global Campus Springfield and life in 2009!

Friday August 14  Summer Campus to Campus Connections, Burlington-Celebrate

The History of Lake Champlain!  Join Global Campus participants from around Vermont as we gather to learn about and celebrate the history of Lake Champlain and our community of learners.  More details to come!

Wednesdays   9:00 am Java Time (Tammy Meunier-Faculty) is ongoing throughout the summer.  Join Tammy and friends for an old-fashioned social gathering to learn about the history of coffee and tea and more!  

Rainy day possibilities:  A Taste of the 1800’s-Learn about and cook some food from this time period.

-Visit the Weathersfield Historical Society Museum/Rev. Dan Foster House, Weathersfield

-Miller Art Center, Springfield

-Learn about life in the 1800 and 1900’s through the census, photographs, letters and diaries.  Create a diary page or letter and photographs for our time capsule.

-Create our time capsule which we will share at the Summer Campus to Campus Conference with other campuses.
