OUR HISTORY
In 1979, there were no options for residential services for children with developmental disabilities in Windsor and Windham counties. A group of determined parents formed a non profit agency they named Lincoln Street Inc., after the street in Springfield where the first Intermediate Care Facility for disabled children in the State of Vermont was established. Three children from the local community and three children living at the Brandon Training school moved to the house on Lincoln Street.
From the beginning the Board of Directors of LSI has been comprised of people who are closely connected to the organization, either by being a family member of someone we serve, direct service recipient, or by professional experience.
LSI has continually evolved according to Best Practices in the field of Developmental Disabilities; from the establishment of additional group homes to their subsequent closure and the development of contracted home providers to serve one or two individuals, LSI changes according to the needs of its constituents.
LSI has an array of individualized community services, supported employment services as well as
ongoing educational opportunities for those we serve.
LSI supports Self Advocacy, by supporting two groups to have a voice regarding their services and the direction of the agency. They are also active in the statewide and national self advocacy movement.
